The Gunslinger (The Dark Tower, #1)
by Stephen King
by Stephen King
So here I was thinking that I could handle Stephen King; even though I don't like horror. I can make an exception for Stephen King. I've seen Cujo, Pet Sematary, & Carrie (ok, so it was a long long time ago and my cousins forced me to watch them.) The Green Mile and The Shawshank Redemption are on my list of all time favorite movies. And plus The Gunslinger was supposed to be about a guy chasing another guy across the desert. I mean, what's so scary about that? So I was prepared for whatever The King was going to throw my way.
Or so I thought...I immediately loved the book. Roland is the ultimate badass and he kills anybody that gets in his way. And then I met Jake. Aww Jake. I liked him immediately. And then Roland asked him how he ended up in the desert. (view spoiler)
Yeah so...I just couldn't continue after that. The only other thing I dislike more than horror is when awful things happen to children. Maybe if I would have known it was going to happen I would have been ok, but that scene just came out of nowhere. Before picking up this book I had just read The Book Thief, so the last thing I needed was to read another story where something awful happens to a child.
So 3 stars...because I really enjoyed the first part of this book.

I'm sorry you didn't enjoy it. But if you're ever of the mind to revisit the journey for the Dark Tower, I would read the next book. Major spoilers aside, Roland is joined by a cast of some of the most unforgettable characters in literature. And Jake, oh Jake. Well, I'll just say that we haven't seen the last of him ;)
I've read so many good things about the series that I plan to finish it. I just need a month or two to get that image out of my head. Nothing else like that happens again does it? I have to be prepared for stuff like that. lol
Well, King doesn't often treat his characters gently. I'll just say that all of the characters you care about will be in for a romp of both abuse and triumph. But if you can stomach it, I think you'll end up really appreciating the series.
I guess it's fortunate that you stopped reading when you did. Because more awful things happen to Jake.
