This was just okay. There were some interesting pieces and some different twists in this urban fairy tale, but I felt the characters were rather flat and lacked sufficient depth. Melissa Marr does have some good writing skills so I won't throw her out entirely because I think she shows a lot of promise.

Elizabeth She does show promise. I liked this book enough to read the second one as well. They aren't the best things I've ever read but I think I'm particularly fond of these books right now because Marr shows that you can have that dark, gothic sensibility and it doesn't have to be about vampires in Washington with good, old fashioned values.
