A brilliant readable episode of This American Life. There were the usual, Sedaris-esque, "this is a funny little tale that's technically true but I've clearly embellished" pieces that tickle the spirit, but the collection shines in its more serious inclusions. Essays by Michael Pollan and Lee Sandlin sent me into obsessive Internet research jags about meat production and WWII, respectively--jags that wouldn't have occurred without the eloquent prose of these talented writers. Bill Buford's essay on Manchester football fans was a thrilling example of the need for creative non-fictional accounts of the "news."
