I enjoyed this book. The writing was rich and poetic. The plot was a little tiresome based on the fact that Erdrich cast a wide net in this novel that is less than 400 pages. Each chapter was a different perspective and time. Sometimes I found myself enjoying what I was reading but a little confused with context ("how exactly did I get here?").
Also the jacket blurb leads the reader into thinking there is a mystery to be solved. There is but it seems like a minor part of the plot, but a big part of the ending, which is a little odd...climactic and yet not climactic at the same time...
Was this a good book? yes. Should it be the first Louise Erdrich you should read? no.

Martha Louise Erdrich is one of those writers whose work should be read more or less in order of publication. She has several families that she expands on in each new novel. Probably having read earlier books would make this better understood.

That being said, I have read only about four of her books. My favorite was The Master Butchers' Singing Club. This is about mostly European people in a small town in North (South?) Dakota.
