Kitten's First Full Moon

by Kevin Henkes
Kitten's first full moon by Kevin Henkes is one of my favorite books to date. This book is a winner of the 2005 Caldecott award. The story is about a little kitten who loves to drink milk. Any child that has a cat or just loves cats will understand the importance of a bowl of milk. The little kitten wants milk so bad that it tries to lick the faraway moon. When she tries to lick the moon, she ends up getting a bug on her tongue. Then she tries to catch the moon and tumbles down the stairs. There is a repeating phrase throughout the book which is, "Still, there was the little bowl of milk, still waiting." This phrase repeated over and over is fun for children who can echo the teacher, or person reading the book. Children will love the humor in the story line and will fall in love with the illustrations. The illustrations, only in black and white explain the book so well, that without words, the book is still readable. There are strong deep lines and the circle/oval image is repeated in almost every picture (looking like a bowl of milk). This story is definitely a book I would recommend to younger children. It's a story about a cat wanting something so bad and in the end finally receiving it. Definitely a 5 star book because the illustrations and the written words worked absolutely amazing together and created a piece of art that every child will love.
