Very rarely do I look forward to reading a graphic novel as much as I looked forward to this one. From the blurb, it was obvious that it would be a different experience from reading Blankets simply due to subject matter. Before I even cracked the book open, I was hooked. The blurb on the back doesn't beg not to be ignored; it demands not to be ignored. Also, Craig Thompson's narrative skills are addictive (and I knew this from reading Blankets in one sitting.) Habibi is more than a comic, more than a story. It is a thousand stories, blended and experienced across culture and history. It is a timeless exploration of human suffering and redemption, of loss and love. My anticipation could never have prepared me for what a tremendously honest and insightful gift Craig Thompson has given us with Habibi.
