This book is almost melancholy. I think of the heroine as the anti-Emma: older, not beautiful, ignored, introverted, always proper. Reading it, you can't help but think that things will not work out well for her, and that Austen's not capable of making things better. Very different feel to this novel, but compelling.

Jane Austen
“My idea of good company...is the company of clever, well-informed people, who have a great deal of conversation; that is what I call good company.'
'You are mistaken,' said he gently, 'that is not good company, that is the best.”
