I have never been able to love satire. Something about the inability to make an emotional connection with any characters, or the book (movie, etc) itself, since it's all an intentional facade. See also: loving The Daily Show more than The Colbert Report, despite my affection for Stephen himself.

So this felt very light. Also, of course, pervy and profane and all that. But what bugged was I couldn't really tell what I was supposed to be seeing satirized; it felt like a moving target, or like a whole bunch of things at once. I love Helen Dewitt but this is a very different book than The Last Samurai. In many ways it reminded me of the beige, office-y feeling I got from parts of Then We Came to the End. Which may have been the point.
