The events in the series have really toughened Sookie Stackhouse up. She's faster to stand up for herself, less likely to tolerate an uneven relationship, and more accepting of the harsh realities of the supernatural world.

Unlike many of the previous books, From Dead To Worse doesn't really focus on a main storyline based on either vamp or shifter politics. These aspects are included, and there are important events that involve all of the main supernatural groups that Sookie is involved with. But these major events are resolved with an almost surprising speed, and some more personal subplots get just as much attention.

The vampires of Louisiana are still reeling from both the detestation caused by Hurricane Katrina and the events of the vampire summit in Rhodes, and tensions in the Shreveport werewolf pack lead to murder.
