I had read so many reviews of The Tiger's Wife that I delayed reading it for some time after I purchased it. I feared I might not like it and stand alone in my opinion, or perhaps it would be such a brilliant novel that once read I could never experience that pleasure again. I can now report that I really enjoyed the novel, but would not rate it as one of my 'top reads'. The book is beautifully written with such dense and descriptive prose, and all this from a 25 year old first time novelist. It mixes fantasy and folklore of former Yugoslavia with reality of the present day. It involves reading stories within the story and always returning to the main plot line, however sometimes the tangents were lengthy and involved and a little superflous. Overall an enjoyable read but it won't steal a place on my top 20.
