First Impressions: I’ve read other books written by Chris Bohjalian before and have enjoyed each and every one of them. He is an extremely talented author and I highly respect and admire him. When I had seen on Goodreads that this new novel was coming out, I was thrilled! I happily accepted the chance to review this book and share this author with all of my readers!

First 50 Pages: It started out a bit slow, but most of Chris’s books do so I was expecting that. This author is highly imaginative and his writing style will take some getting use to. He is very descriptive and takes his time informing the reader of every little detail. Not everyone is going to like this style of writing, but I do so I enjoyed it. The action and the suspense picks up about half-way through the book, and what came next was frightening.

Plot: If I had to describe this book, I would say that is a mix between Stephen King and Alfred Hitchcock. That is the best way I can explain it. This book has a little bit of everything; Suspense, horror, terrifying ghosts, the occult, witch covens, demonic possessions, and mental illnesses. I can only imagine how much research the author had to do in order for this book to become alive. I stayed up half of the night just to finish this book. Well, that and the fact I was half afraid to go to sleep after reading it! This book also made me never, ever want to fly in a plane again. I think from now on, I’ll stick to ground travel.

I really liked the fact that this book weaved in the true story of the heroic water landing of a passenger jet by Sully Sullenberger in January 2009. Unfortunately, in this book the poor passengers do not survive the landing like they did in real life.

Final Thoughts: I’m not going to give away any more than that. I loved this book! It was creepy and a perfect read for a crisp October night. This would be an awesome book to read around Halloween to get you in the seasonal mood. Chris’s prose is outstanding as usual and I think that The Night Strangers is now my new favorite of his books. Highly recommend to anyone who is looking for a great thrill ride!
