New Orleans was hit by massive and devastating hurricanes and is now an independent city collectively governed by nine ancient families called the Novem. The city is in half ruins and a rumored haven for supernatural creatures. Ari, an orphan, finds clues about her biological parents which leads her to New 2. From the moment she arrives she discovers more about her mother, the Novem and her own heart. Ari carries the same curse as her mother and is determined not to have the same fate. Some of the Novem wanted to use Ari while other's wanted to protect her and New 2 from a force more powerful than themselves. Sebastian, Ari's beau, desires her safety and finding a way to have the curse lifted. Through Sebastian's help she discovers the truth about her curse and ultimately who she really is.

A blend of the supernatural and mythology in a fast paced entertaining story. This is a shorter book so some things are rushed, for example, Ari literally falls for Sebastian within a day or two of being in New 2. It makes the romantic thread in the story extremely unbelievable. I definitely did NOT see the twist involving her father at the end.
