Golly. Well, it's just like the title says, First Love and Other Sorrows --Brodky is relentless in uncovering the hidden opposite emotion tucked into the heart of whatever situation. Every "yes" has a "no" in its heart. The strength of the writing is that he's uncovering, not manufacturing; his are reversals of emotion, not so much plot, and each little tumble sets another in motion. It's true. And it has the added bonus, for me, of being set in the verdant wet magical plainness of my midwestern childhood--trees and neighborhoods and skies and mistakes made ardently.
