This book was very different from a biography -- the main "character" is the friendship between these two women, their love of dogs, their rowing, their motivation to challenge one another to succeed through difficult times. We get limited knowledge of their lives -- not much about their childhoods, careers, other relationships -- but that doesn't diminish the book because it's really meant to be just about the depth of their friendship and the depth of the loss that Caroline's death proved to be.
