Spiegalman’s post 9/11 book shows how one man – a man who happened to live near the Towers AND be an amazing graphic artist – responded to 9/11. His anecdotes and political responses to the day are not original – only the format stands practically unrivaled in the world of 9/11 books. I was interested that Art took solace in turn of the century (that’s turn of the 19th century) comics after the attacks. The part of the book that interested me the most were the plates collecting examples of these early comics. Little Nemo, in particular, was already haunting before reading In the Shadow of No Towers; after slobbering over the presentation of one page of Nemo here, my interest is beyond piqued. A good change of pace from the other five 9/11 books and two movies I have seen in the last month; perhaps a palate cleanser for the little that still remains of my “unit.”
