Two things made me call it quits on this book 70 pages in.

First, the word sorghum is everywhere! The title, the chapters, 8x per page, 2x+ per paragraph. It's worse than Bubba from Forest Gump and shrimp.

Second, the violence is described in more detail than the sorghum. Every other page someone is getting shot in the stomach and their green, smelly intenstines ooze out. And when that one guy got skinned alive...gross!

Justine I agree in that this book is by far the most gruesome that I have ever read. I was able to deal with the violence because it depicts a real time in China and pays homage to those who lost their lives to the Japanese. I thought it was important to acknowledge these horrors because they were a reality for the Chinese people. It also allowed me to appreciate my own life's stability and safety. All in all, I liked it!

Lianna Cool I'm glad you liked it. Check out Life and Death in Shanghai if you haven't read it yet.

Justine thanks!
