Shelter is a coming-of-age tale of two sisters, Jennie and Maggie, told in Maggie's voice. It takes place in the interior of northern British Columbia in the 1970s and, in many ways, the scenery is as much a character in this book as the people who inhabit it. Shelter explores the relationships between children and their parents and between sisters and, although the story deals with loss and its repercussions, the book is, at heart, hopeful.

This is not an exciting story, there is no big adventure, no suspense, no shocking revelations yet I found it almost impossible to put down. Ms Greenslade has a wonderful eye for character and a marvelous way of looking at life as most of us live it. If you are a fan of Canadian authors like Margaret Laurence and Alice Munro, I guarantee you will enjoy this book.
