bookshelves: historical-fiction, ya, best-books-i-read-in-2011
Read from September 29 to 30, 2011

I chose to read this because it’s Banned Books Week and this is a popular and banned book. I don’t believe I’ve read it, at least I don’t remember it and it seems like something I would have read when it first came out.

Patty Bergen is an isolated twelve year old Jewish girl in a small town in Arkansas during World War II. Her family is the only Jewish one in town. Her parents treat her badly; her father beats her and her mother discounts and ridicules her. A German POW camp is placed outside her town, and she meets a nice German boy, forms an attachment with him and hides him in the garage when he runs away from the camp.

Among other things it’s about anti- Semitism and racism, as the family maid Ruth is one of the few adults Patty trusts, or should trust. This is an excellent book, I’m glad I read it.
