Definitely a first-time author. It's a little hard to say whether or not I recommend it.

Cons: Like Eragon, this book has just about every fantasy stereotype there is. People also spend a lot more time laughing and bowing than should happen in any two or three books.

Pros: The overall concept (adventurers set up a contract dictating the terms of the adventure) is interesting, and I think it's utilized fairly well. There's also an intriguing concept of death; it may be the most original thing in the book.

I've had one person tell me, "This is the book that will get [boys] to read." For teenagers and older, it's a little tiresome to be dealing with so many overused archetypes, though I did find it hard to put the book down. However, the series improves an amazing amount in the second book, so it's probably worth it to get through this one.
