I was oddly disappointed by this book, didn't like it nearly as well as the other Phillipa Gregory books I've read. It might have been the jumpiness of the narrative voice (between past-tense third person omniscient and present-tense first person), or the way some segments were described in loving detail and then long periods of time skimmed over in ways that felt jarring. Catalina talks about her great friends at court, but we never see them becoming friends, or watch them interact as friends; it's a show-don't-tell violation, and it bothered me.

It's too bad, because it was an interesting subject and not one I've seen covered in fiction before, and I thought the first half of the book was very good. I just wish the rest had lived up to it.
