The mystery/adventure starts when an "average" orphan named Reynie answers a newspaper ad: "Are you a gifted child looking for special opportunities?" He turns out to be good at riddles, and is the only kid in his test group who passes on to the next round of tests. He and the other successful applicants form The Mysterious Benedict Society, a group of spies who try to save the world from an evil genius's mind-control scheme.

This is good stuff. The kids are smart and plucky, and learn about teamwork and trust. Even though the book is 485 pages, it's a quick read.
