The dark tone and violent subtext of this book makes me feel like it's the teeniest bit older than its intended middle grades audience. But then again, I don't really know kids that well and I read some stuff that was way past my "appropriate" age level back in the day. And I turned out fine! Really!

What I really appreciated about this book was that I could never tell for sure what the author was going to do. I knew what traditional fairy tale rules would do, but I wasn't sure that Billingsley would follow them. I also loved that this story aligns more closely with the classic, Grimm style fairy tale. There's darkness, violence, betrayal, all the good stuff. Worth reading!
