How does one give a star-rating to a classic like Don Quixote? Did the book lose a star for not transcending centuries of ever-shortening attention spans to keep me reading beyond page 200? I found the introduction to the version I read compelling for its explanation of how Quixote was the precursor to the modern novel, and for its brief history of the era. I found the story itself funny and charming, with long stretches of prose that was perfectly designed to fill the long, languishing days of Spanish literature's Golden Age.
