'He had read stuff the NYPD's medical people were putting about concerning diet and exercise.' That quoted sentence is not preceded with a comment about an NYPD journal, missive, or any other piece of writing. If it had been, I would find the sentence more palatable, but I would still think it was a poorly worded idea. As it was, it was preceded with a comment about how the police officer had decided to become a healthier person.

'....were putting about....'. What a poorly constructed sentence. If anyone wants to tell me that that sentence works, well, I'm not going to believe them.

I am left wondering if the author wrote the sentence that way, or if some editor 'improved' his writing!

I like the Jack Reacher series but this one doesn't shine for me.

On a positive note: the author did take a character that I thought would be very minor, Marilyn, and had her be a stand-out! Now THAT was a good piece of character development. Her part in the story line made me happy, both with the author and the story.
