Auntiepam's review
WHAT???!!! I haven't read this series yet because I don't do YA, but everyone raves about it. I've never heard anyone say they didn't like it.
So what did you dislike so much about it? I'm shocked and very curious, because I have secretly thought I might not like it either. It's a YA thing for me though (too much teen angst).

I managed to read about 100 pages. I love YA fiction, and I've read several good books featuring normal humans falling in love with vampires and werewolves. I also loved Buffy and Angel, and Veronica Mars, so I'm cool with teenage POV's. I've read lots of good books with teenage protagonists. Teenagers can be interesting people.
But with Twilight, I thought the writing was pedestrian. Even after a few pages, the characters' actions became repetitive. After 100 pages, I wasn't engaged. I had questions but didn't care if they were answered. Like: Why was Bella unpopular in Phoenix but an immediate hit in Forks? Why is a gorgeous 90-year-old vampire hanging out in a high school? What does Edward see in Bella? What does Bella see in Edward? All we know about him is that he's gorgeous. Meyer manages to mention this every single time Bella sees him. That was incredibly annoying. If I had Alzheimer's, I might appreciate being reminded. But I don't. You only have to describe a character once and I'll remember.
I went to Amazon and read some reviews there, to see if someone could explain what I was missing. Some of the reviews had spoilers for the rest of the book (and future books). Normally this would be upsetting, but in this case, the reviews saved me some reading time. Reviewers described inconsistencies and silly plot contrivances, and confirmed that the books are pretty much Bella and Edward mooning over each other.
From what I read, the book and its characters have no depth or flavor. Normally I give a book 50 pages. Because a good friend sent me these books, I gave it a hundred. I regret wasting even that much time.
Thanks, Pam--
Your questions are the same ones I have had. And inconsistencies drive me NUTS as a novelist. Thanks so much! We are on the same street with this one (grin).

I learn more from reading negative reviews than I do from reading the positive reviews. I think it's because when reviewers go against the flow, they take care to be specific about what they don't like. It's hard to argue with specific examples.
Have you read Donna Boyd's werewolf series? They're romancey too, but they're also very rich.
No, I haven't. What is the series called? I'll have to check it out. Thanks!

Two books -- The Passion and The Promise. A friend loaned them to me a few years ago. Amazon has used copies, cheap.
I see lots of people recommending Angela Carter. Have you read her stuff?
Thanks! No, I haven't read anything by Angela Carter. I hear she writes magical realism. Looks interesting. Let me know what you think about her novels when you read one.
