Read in January, 1982

Reading Battle of the Pelennor Fields and Pyre of Denethor back to back is an intense experience- one of those great moments that become a cornerstone touchstone bloodstone of a little literary life. I couldn't bear to see these scenes translated onto big screen- this was too big.
That said, Return of the King is the perfect book to complete a true trilogy, and despite its epic moments (because of them?) can not be rewarding like the intimacy and exunerance of the first two. It is wearier, sadder and heavier. Hope and fear give way to fate and doom. Scouring of the Shire is unepectedly good and weird, and makes a body want to go right back to the Silmarillion.
Great appendices, too.
