this is a compilation of short stories. it is a very interesting book from a number of standpoints, not the least of which is its glorification of the bad guy. the stories are essentially about the lives of evildoers, hence the title. the thesis of the book, if you can say that a collection of shorts has a thesis, seems to be that the common thread that runs through human history is the presence of bad guy, and this is a book with the uncommon mission of telling his story. a very good read, and the language that borges uses is pure magic.
