Susanne Whitestone grew up as a servant in her own house. Her father, Richard Whitestone, has secluded himself in his room ever since his wife, Rebecca, died shortly after Susanne was born, and concentrates all of his efforts on bringing Rebecca back to life. Susanne's days are happy even though they are filled with hard work until her father notices how closely she resembles his dead wife and begins to take an unhealthy interest in his daughter.

This story, like Robin McKinley's Deerskin, is a retelling of the Allerleirauh or All-Fur fairy tale. This is the sixth book in the Elemental Masters series and the first one that I did not really like.
