I just did not get it....I mean I tried really I did. But I came up lacking. I believe my biggest problem was the way it was written. I think that the important parts of book three could have been incorporated into books 1 and 2. For me, there was just way too much repetition. Having said that if I were to rate based on the three individual books, I would have given book 1 3 stars Book 2 most likely would have gotten 3 as well, but the third was just ......meh so that would have been a 2.

I did enjoy reading some of the early history of Florida and "the glades". Learning about quit claims and plume hunting was very interesting, Well the plume hunting was a bit disturbing, especially the scene in book 1 where they went into detail about how most plume hunters worked. The treatment of the Indians, Blacks and mixed races bothered me as well, but since history tells us it was all true it did not shock me , just saddened me. By reading you can totally see that Mr Matthiessen is an environmentalist, just by the way he points out several times how they diminished whole gaggles of plume birds , fish and gators.

I believe that of all 3 books my favorite would have had to have been the second, with the son trying to find out what went so wrong and how his long lost brother fit into things. On the whole I am glad I read this one ...but I don't really see any more of this author's works being added to my TBR pile for quite some time.....if ever.

Charity Oh dear! I tried, Scott, I really did. But, my eyes would just glaze over and I'd find that I'd somehow "read" an entire page (or pages) while my mind was off somewhere else. (Have you ever done that? Your eyes "read" a page on auto-pilot, but your mind goes off on its own?) I'd have to reread practically every page! Since I'd been having so much trouble finding time to even read books that actually captivated me, I decided to ditch this one that didn't. Please don't hate me! I promise we'll get a good buddy read in very soon. ♥

ScottK Dear Charity Ross....You really did not miss anything, and I figured you had given up when I received no replies to my messages....NO WORRIES, there are still plenty of books to be read and I look forward to picking our next buddy read.Have no fear..you are still one of my besties.

Sherry I'm very happy to have not given in to the impulse to buy this...looks like I dodged a bad read by doing so!

Charity Ugh, I'm soooo sorry about that, Scott! First, let me say that I am the WORLD'S WORST at answering emails/messages because if I don't do it IMMEDIATELY, then I completely forget. Many times I will just be waiting in line somewhere or have some kind of lull in an activity and I will read my messages but get pulled away before I am able to respond and then I just forget to go back to it. I'm terrible. Second, October was HORRIFICALLY busy! I have never been sooo happy to see November come because I have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING on the agenda. It is going to be blissful.

All that being said, I'm still glad that I didn't finish that book and I offer you a million snaps for getting through it! Love ya!!
