SIGH!

A lot of people are going to hate me for this rating! I love quiet, contemplative novels. In fact, some of my favourite works of contemporary fiction are of this very nature - The Sea, Homer & Langley & Out Stealing Horses, as great examples. The Cat's Table just doesn't hold a candle to these books. I really wasn't engaged with the story or the characters. There was a hopeful moment of interesting reading at the very end of the story but it was, I suppose, too little, too late.

I am sorry Mr. Ondaatje.

Thank you, Eric! I just read the transcript but look forward to listening to the interview later today. In one moment, during the discussion, Ondaatje mentions the moment he named the main character "Michael" and that moment, while I was reading the story, totally jumped out at me.

Have you read the novel already?

Eric I haven't yet, but it's now on my to-read list. I was intrigued by the interview.

Ondaatje is a lovely and thoughtful man. I always enjoy seeing or hearing an interview with him He is on the longlist for Canada's Giller Prize, so I wanted to read it before the shortlist is announced this Tuesday - October 4th.
