This amazing book is based on truth, although written as a novel. It takes place inside a prison in Myanmar (Burma) and focuses on the relationship between a prisoner who is a political dissident and a young orphan boy. Both these characters also develop tender relationships with one of the jailers who risks his life in his love for them.

Karen Connelly is a Canadian author who won the Governor-General's award for her account of her foreign exchange student experience in Thailand. She is a poet and this is reflected in her eye for color, detail and imagery. I loved this book and put it down only under extreme duress.
