Read in May, 2008

This is an excellent book. It answers the question that so many people were asking after 9/11: why do they hate us so much? It also traces the development of Al Qaeda and highlights the influence of many of the major radical Islamist leaders.

Lawrence Wright conducted an enormous number of interviews with friends and family of Osama Bin Laden, Ayman Al Zawahiri and many of the other notorious Al Qaeda members. He cultivated relationships with CIA, FBI, White House and other U.S. officials. He also uses information gleaned from interviews with many Saudi, Egyptian, Pakistani and Afghan officials, journalists and academics.

He manages to weave all of this information into a coherent timeline leading from the late 40's to several months post 9/11.

I'm looking forward to another book from Lawrence Wright.

Mike What a great review mom. For a second though, I thought you were talking about the Richard Clark book "Scorpion's Gate." (haha)

Ann Richard Clarke is quoted a lot in "The Looming Tower". Now Clarke has a new book out. Also, Lawrence Wright has a long article in the June 2 New Yorker about defectors from Al Qaeda. I guess he just can't stop working on the subject. I'm reading the article now. It's also very interesting and a good complement to the article in today's Washington Post that covers Hayden's latest speech about progress against Al Qaeda.

Mike I have been seeing a lot of Richard Clark lately too (promoting the new book). I heard him on Fresh Air, I think and then on the Daily Show, where he was charming. He sounded like Robert Reich, actually.

Ann I think I heard that same interview. Clarke sounds pretty grumpy but I guess he has some reason.
