I've never read Saramago, and after this book, honestly, I probably won't again. Although very compelling and at times disgusting, I found the translation a little off. The words seemed a little too formal for modern english. In reading another review of this book, someone said that the style of his writing was an allagory of the subject matter itself, and I absolutely agree. As a reader, you're groping with the language, asking questions of who said what, who is this, what is that, is exactly how the blind in this book felt. That, is genius.
