This is another coming of age book with the protagonist a young girl who is both brave and unconventional. The story is more traditional of fantasy involving dragons and other components unique to the story such as the deadly "thread" that falls from the sky. Menolly is a strong, willful young woman. She struggles with inter-personal relationships and feels like she doesn't fit in. She has trouble with the other girls at the school she is going to. This is a good read for any young woman who feels like she doesn't quite fit the mold.
