It took a bit to warm up to this story, as Jack comes across as a Class A, self-absorbed jerk. However, as the story unfolds, Jack turns out to have emotional depth and the ability to be altruistic, if in his own peculiar way.

One of the things I liked about Jack is that there are things that scare him, there are things that make it a challenge for his to think straight, there are things that break his heart.

The only thing with the pacing that could have been better between when the reader figures out the various truths about the grandmother and about what was the terrible blot on the karma of the sister and brother, and when Jack does. (Or even what to use as a weapon on the roof!) Or maybe it's just that I'm a voracious reader.
