Yummy is based on the true story of Robert “Yummy” Sandifer who lived and died tragically in Chicago 1994. The story is seen through the eyes of a fictional character Roger, whose objective distance helps us as the reader to follow Yummy’s downfall. The author's purpose is to reach reluctant readers, especially males who may be involved in gangs. Both author and illustrator did an excellent job of portraying the complexities and intricacies of Robert Sandifer. The super sweet child who slept with a teddy bear and loved his grandmother -nicknamed Yummy for his love of sweets, and the unrelenting bully who would eventually kill in his search for a place where he belonged.
