I had read "A Bend in the Road" by Nicholas Sparks book and flew through it so fast (and enjoyed it), which left me hungry for more corny Sparks romance. I quickly began "The Lucky One", which I was told was one of his best novels. Sadly, I must disagree. I am also begininng to learn that my opinion of Sparks books is either the book is a huge hit or just mediocre. This one totally falls into the mediocre category and left me feeling like the feelings and tender moments were too forced.
The following ay or may not contain spoilers:
While fighting in Iraq, U.S. Marine Logan Thibault stumbles upon a photograph of a beautiful woman with a message written on the back. This photo becomes a good luck charm, and Thibault seems to be untouched by the dangers of war. After returning home, Thibault encounters a terrible tragedy, which provokes him to travel across the United States by foot to hunt for the woman in his lucky photograph. When he finds her, a single mother named Elizabeth, he falls madly in love as well as finding a special place in his heart for her son. But Elizatbeth's jealous ex Keith Clayton is a sneaky man who is prepared to ruin Elizabeth's life to stop her from dating other men.
Again, I felt like this story could have been good but seemed mega-fake and forced. The "dramatic" scene at the end was a real let-down and I just didn't find myself enjoying the book anymore. It is sad how bad I just wanted this book to end so I could read something more enjoyable. I gave the rating of 2 stars instead of one due to the weird endearing moments involing Elizabeth's Nana and the touching parts with Thibault's dog Zeus. Skip this book...you won't be missing out on much.
