I really do like listening to young adult novels as audiobooks. The narrators really seem to put a lot of effort into creating the voices of the characters. This one is no exception.

The Gates is an excellent choice for kids in middle school. It is basically the story of a young boy who sets out with his dog to save the world from the consequences of the gates of hell opening up on earth. Heavily footnoted with comments and "scientific" asides, the author at times seems to be laughing at his own jokes. I didn't really mind it though. It is a silly story and would appeal to its intended younger audience.
