Scrooge meets . . . Cinderella

Evie worked in housekeeping in Rio Zacarelli’s hotel when he met her. Evie should have listened to her instincts but she didn’t. It’s in her nature to trust people and always find the good in them, because somewhere deep inside there usually seems to be some good buried there. She loves her grandfather very much and desperately tries to not disappoint him. This plays into Rio’s hands and he uses it to get what he wants. For him the ends justify the means. She is an eternal optimist and he would be well . . . a pessimist. She is sarcastic and she says things to Rio that are a bit funny!

Salvatorio Zaccarelli hurt her a lot, but she doesn’t hold grudges. Light and fluffy fun read for most part then it got deeper towards the end when his “deal” was explained. He tried to make her fit all the things he knew about women, but she never did. She kept surprising him. He does underestimate people and it was refreshing to see him find out how wrong he is. She is drawn to him and his sad aloofness. She starts to crack his shell because she is not the rule she is the exception. He changed over the course of the story. Rio is a manipulator who maneuvers to obtain what he wants, but he does feel guilty for this. However, he knows he wouldn’t change a thing as the ends justify the means. His point was well brought out and if Evie had acted the way a vindictive woman would have then she would have proven her point in him categorizing her with the rest of the women he has known, but since she didn’t it further ensnared him. Nothing but the most unique woman in his circle would ever do for him. This was such a lovely read and I for one was sorry to see it end.
