I should preface this by saying that I don't really know anything about philosophy, so from the other reviews it seems that Durant can be bias, although I wouldn't realize all of it (he does have a very obvious anti-epistemology and anti-religion bias). With that being said this book was more of a collection of a few short introductions to about 10 western philosophers (along with some brief glimpses of an additional 8), I liked this format though because it did allow more depth for the discussed philosophers. He focused on the philosophers background and history in addition to their philosophy which was nice getting a context for what they wrote. Durant is very entertaining and writes well and this book served its purpose, it has me very interested in reading books by the actual philosophers and to further explore the field. This was an excellent introduction for a novice like myself.

booklady I concur David. It was my intro to a self-study of philosophy and I found it helpful as a launching pad.
