This novella is a great example of Oates' powerful grasp on emotions and language. I particularly loved the shift in narrator, from character to character (although predominantly told by the daughter) and I loved the use of second person narration.

This is a heavy novella and I thought it best that Oates left it at 150 pages. Anymore and you'd be ready to call your psychiatrist for a higher dose of anti-depressants. This is a tragic story of a rape yet a beautiful story of the love between a mother and daughter. It's short enough to read in one sitting, which is best because it's hard to put down.
