A new prequel to Anne of Green Gables is obviously met with suspicion. It's not like Pride and Prejudice which has a plethora of sequels, alternative tellings, fan fiction, etc. But it turned out pretty good. Although the author did not capture the tone exactly as L.M. Montgomery wrote, she did capture the essence of Anne - her love of anything beautiful and her imagination. Montgomery's ability to show the thoughts and motivations of characters who are angry or cross - something that works well in children's books to help young readers better understand human nature - was effectively done by the prequel author, who has extensive experience writing children's books.

The best part of the book, though, was knowing at the end of the book, as Anne rides the train to Prince Edward Island, that I don't have to be in suspense about what happens to Anne. I have seven more books to read, or reread, to find out if life gets better for Anne.
