bookshelves: 2008-reads
Read in April, 2008

My first Gena Showalter book was "The Stone Prince" back in 2004. Since then, I'm pretty sure I've read every book she's had published with the exception of her young adult line. And I'm also pretty sure that I've highly enjoyed every one! Her books always contain elements of magic and although her different series may have become darker and more sensual over the last couple of years, I, for one, am certainly happy about that!

"The Darkest Night" is her new series that revolves around the myth of Pandora's Box. In Showalter's world, the guardians who were passed over in favor of Pandora in guarding the Box got pissed...and opened the Box. The demons inside immediately took control of the guardians and the gods cursed them to eternally carry these demons as a result. So Wrath, Death, Sadness, Violence, Disease, Pain, Promiscuity, etc are all now embodied in these guardians. Pretty cool, huh?

Ashlyn Darrow has always heard voices. Put her anywhere and she can hear every conversation that ever took place there and understand it regardless of the language used. While some might consider that a gift, she knows it must be a curse as the voices NEVER leave her alone. Her parents give her to a 'society' when she turns five as her torments and constant crying are just too much for them. She assists the 'society' in hunting out the paranormal things in the world for study...or at least that's what she believes. Unfortunately for her, what she believes and what's really going on could end up killing her!

It's always fascinating to come on a 'new' series that manages to be different. My kudos to Ms Showalter for managing to do that with this new "Darkest" series. If you enjoy sensual stories of paranormal beings and things that go 'bump in the night', hot Alpha men, strong female leads, and scorching sex...then this is a series you need to read! Bok two "Darkest Kiss" is scheduled for a June 2008 release.

Tammy I've read both of Gena's contemporary romances and really enjoyed them. TO CATCH A MATE is one of my favorites - very funny and very sexy! One of these days I will have to make time to read her paranormals. She is a great author and one of the few who stays in constant contact with her friends. I've even talked to her myself a few times on MySpace.

Great review, Julie.

Daisiemae I really love her books too. I liked the Nymph King and Heart of the Dragon. Catch a Mate was great too. The only books I haven't read by her are the ones written in first person..y'all know how much I HATE first person and the young adult books. Is this is first person Julie????

Tammy Shel:

You know I hate first person as much as you do, but I didn't have so much of a problem with this in Gena's books. ANIMAL INSTINCTS was written in first person and I truly enjoyed it, altho I have to admit I missed reading hopping into the hero's head. Still, it wasn't as bad as some of the others that I've tried.

Daisiemae Tammy...if you only knew how much I have tried to read first person in romance! I just can't do it! That is one reason I don't like Outlander...y'all don't throw rotten veggies at me for that one, but honestly if I order a book and it is first person, I don't even try to read it anymore...I just pass it along.

Julie (jjmachshev) Shel,
It's got some parts that are first person, but she switches back and forth. I actually had to get up and go check to make sure because it didn't bother me at all...
J

Eastofoz I stay away from first person too--it bugs me--I didn't know that this book was half and half. It's on it's way over to me actually. I wish they'd say that in reviews! The only first person I've ever read and liked was Katie MacAlister's Aisling Grey Guardian series and it took me an eternity to finally give it a shot but it turned out to be a good one. One I totally hated was Elizabeth Vaugns War series (Warprize, Warlord etc). God it was bad! First person hell! I've yet to read Outlander--probably one of the few who haven't ;)

Daisiemae East you are a kindred spirit...plus you are making me laugh so hard..."First Person Hell"...that is classic, and so true in my opinion.
I literally read about 5 pages of Outlander(Hey I tried) then sold it on Ebay...lol. Like you, I wish they would tell in the description of the book if it is in First Person. I know some really like it, but I am not one of them.

Christel I just got this one this afternoon and read it tonight. WOW!!! Read my editorial

Eastofoz Daisie considering all the people who don't particularly like first person writing you'd think there'd be a kind of NOTE on the back cover or something (!) I hope Outlander is good. I've heard soooo much about it, plus it's freakin' huge and cost a fortune in shipping (lol!)

Tammy East: I had the same problem with Katie MacAlister's books. I started reading HARD DAY'S KNIGHT but never could finish it.

Shellie: Did you know that I've never read the OUTLANDER series either? I wasn't aware it was written in first person, so I might as well cross that one off the list! Both of Gena Showalter's contemp. romances are the only books I've been able to read in first person.

Eastofoz Oh greeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaat! I have HARD DAY'S KNIGHT on TBR and I didn't know it was in the first person!!!! Hopefully it's as good as the Guardian series and it won't bug me. I think I'm going to have to make a first person TBR pile so that there are no irritating surprises when I pick up a book!

Matthew if this is anything like her other series imma love it
