When Katy Jessevar's father decides to put her in a boarding school in Whitfield, Massachusetts, she is hurt and confused. It turns out that her mother was a witch who tried to kill a young boy years ago. She finds herself increasingly drawn to Peter, a schoolmate who seems attracted to her as well and yet who tries to keep her at arm's length. Katy, too, turns out to have special powers, and she must figure out why the forces of darkness are descending on the town. Although Katy's story works well on many levels, there is very little focus on her academic experiences, which seems odd for a book aimed at teen readers. that's too bad because I enjoyed watching Katy come into her own as she gains confidence in her own abilities to deal with the supernatural. The secondary plot line involving her father's relationship with businesswoman Madame Mim and her father's seeming detachment from his daughter provides some puzzlement and adds complications to the story, but in the case of Mim and her company, the complications distract from the storyline more than they add to it.
