Now I'm showing off...
I'm not going to write a review for the Odyssey; I think that thousands of years of influence and praise speak for themselves.
However, I will tell you what happened when I was reading the last books of the poem, in which Penelope is reunited with her husband. In those days, I happened to be home alone while Alec was in Olney, dog-sitting his mother's dogs. Well, during that time, Alec had to fight against terrible storms that put his commute in peril and isolated him from the world. Alone in a dark house with two huge dogs and no electricity, he had to use his skill to feed himself and the animals out of his parents' abominable provisions. All the while, I was in my warm, perfectly-functioning home with my dog Argo, ehm... Trixie, spending my days and nights writing resumes and rewriting them from scratch all the time. I had neither servants nor suitors, but I didn't have a teenage son, either, thank God. Alec eventually found his way home, and we spent the night talking about all the crazy things that happened as we were apart. We sacrificed some frozen pizza to the Gods, and ate everything in perfect merriment.
