Beautifully written in parts (mainly the first page of each chapter), but as a whole it was a bit contrived--- and boring. I’ll admit, it’s not generally the type of book I would read, but I found it on the bargain rack and decided to give it a go. I found the prose, for the most part, very bland. I could never place my finger on why the start of each chapter was so wonderful and then it just sort of fell apart. I think that overall there was too much telling and not enough showing, which made it hard for me to connect with any of the characters. The plot was just so-so. I felt that certain points were being rehashed again and again throughout the story, which made it tiresome to read. The parts about the lightning were fairly interesting but not enough to carry the story. I think this author is capable of more.
