I found this book a fascinating autobiography of a European journalist who converted to Islam and became involved in the creation of our current Arab countries and states. The balance and stress in the society between tribal needs and traditions then national then international requirements was particularly interesting. The author translates the following from the Prophet Muhammad: "He is not of us who proclaims the cause of tribal partisanship; and he is not of us who fights in the cause of tribal partisanship; and he is not of us who dies for the sake of tribal partisanship."
