I enjoyed this book.

At first, Kostova really pulls the reader in. I was intrigued with the style and feel of the story, as well as the plot and retelling of a classic tale. The mystery that is being revealed through letters (an homage to Bram Stoker I assume) is enthralling and adds a "page-turner" quality to the novel. I was reminded of "The Shadow of the Wind".

However, for me, the story did slow down a bit about 2/3's of the way through. By this point the protagonists are simply moving from one country to the next, making new discoveries, but the plot really seemed to halt. Kostova's descriptions of Eastern Europe are outstanding, and she maintains the gothic feel throughout, so I still gave the book 4 stars. Just be prepared to power through some long sections with little going on.

Overall, a great read.
