Cast in Shadow (Chronicles of Elantra, #1)

I wonder how many "I can't tell you that" I'd find if I began to count. I gave up reading so close to the end but it was an "I can't tell you that" moment that made me roll my eyes. Seriously. Every time I read that it felt like the author didn't know what the secrets were so she said "I can't tell you that" to us. That's not how you add a little mystery to a story. No one really explained the markings on her arm other than saying "I can't tell you that."
I didn't like Kaylin. She seemed like a whiny 20 year old who blamed everyone for her problems. She hasn't dealt with her past? Oh that's Severn's fault. She's not a real Hawk? That's the Hawklord's fault. She's put on leave because she's utterly incompetent? That's Iron Jaw's fault. I find myself not caring because she's a terrible heroine. I wouldn't make her a Hawk. Seriously: she's late, she's obnoxious, she thinks herself somehow above everyone else because she had a tragic childhood. Get therapy. Get over it.
There was so much possibility that I felt like the author squandered it. Her world is different, the strange markings intriguing but when I've page 487 and nothing is really explained to me, I don't care. I should care. But I don't.
From what I've read of other reviews, the rest of the series is a lot like this. People telling her they can't tell her anything, Kaylin being late and sulky, no real relationship building with anyone.
Will I read the rest of the series?
I can't tell you that.

OMG I hated Kaylin. She had no redeeming qualities at all! She was dumb, late, and sulky. I couldn't understand why all these people were her friends and were helping her. She never did crap for them and never thanked anyone. She had so many foot-in-mouth moments, I can't even believe she's still alive. A stronger character would've done something about the "I can't tell you that" crap. But no! She sulked!!

I really wanted to like the book, but yeah, the heroine drove me nuts.
