** spoiler alert ** Good plot (hence three stars), but spoilt by an insipid and improbably naive main protagonist - how this lawyer could fail to see from clues like the diary, the school, and the condition of the head, that the girl had been raped - and that a child was the most likely product of that rape - is beyond me. I found myself skipping over the lawyer's family details because I simply didn't care enough about her or them. Even the goth secretary was far more interesting, but I found the lawyer's constant, snide comments about the woman's weight and dress sense alienating.
A good editor could have cut out much of the lawyer's ruminations and self-justifications of why she was asking the questions, and it would have been a great improvement on the story's pace, and her characterisation. The space could have been filled with more interviews - the lawyer fails to interview several key characters, so the author is forced to add scenes from their view point - and there was no reason why the lawyer couldn't have tried to interview the dead woman's mother much earlier.
She forgets several clues that the author tries - and fails - to bury amongst other details, with the result that the reader ends up knowing more than the main protagonist, which is never a good state of affairs.
As for the 16yr old anorexic character, I initially took her for an 8yr old (it would have worked far better if she had been 8), while the 50-yr old Markus character acted like a hyperactive teenager.
The 'set of golf clubs' plot device was so cliched as to be laughable.

Not inspired to read any more of this author's novels.
